Dr. Frido Smulders: Entrepreneurial Innovation by combining design thinking and system thinking

World-wide there are plenty of challenges that industrial engineers facing in practice. Grand challenges, small challenges and local challenges. All of these challenges could be framed as situations deviating from the norm and therefore can’t be addressed by existing rational problem solving. In other words, there is a need for non-obvious solutions, with new rationalities.

However, once these non-obvious, often out-of-the-box solutions are identified, existing implementation routines frequently fall short to bridge the gap between idea and realization. For that purpose, actors need to turn to collaborative entrepreneurial behaviour with the aim of constituting a new rational practice, the ‘new box’, so to say.

In this tutorial we will discuss these challenges by combining design thinking and (inter-) acting as means to enhance system thinking.
