Dr. Frido Smulders

Short Biography

Dr. Frido Smulders is associate professor of Design, Innovation and Entrepreneurship and director of the Entrepreneurship by Design Lab at the School of Industrial Design Engineering, Delft University of Technology. He is also a TU Delft Fellow of Entrepreneurship Education. Dr. Smulders holds a PhD in ‘Innovation Sciences’ at Delft University of Technology and BSc & MSc degrees in Aerospace Engineering also from Delft.

As an aerospace engineer, his research in the material sciences resulted in Glare, the material now applied in the fuselage of Airbus A380.

Prior to re-joining academia, his career in business spans from a concept engineer in the offshore industry (SBM Offshore) to a materials specialist in aerospace industry (Alcoa) and as management consultant in the field of (technological) innovation and creativity. His present research focuses on the verbs of innovating and entrepreneuring (corporate as well as new venture). He has an almost utopian aim to uncover the fundamental building blocks/’molecules’ of what (technological) innovating really is, that is, its theoretical fundaments. Dr. Smulders’ industrial practice is related to the living lab and he therefore collaborates intensively with a large number of companies.

Included among these collaborations is Unilever on a project called ‘Innovating innovation by Design’, while other partners are: Shell, Henkel, Aegon, LeasePlan, Rabo Bank, etc.
