Abstract

Designing and engineering smart systems is a complex process drawing upon a variety of disciplines and requiring specialized skills from multiple areas of expertise. Integrating the individual components into a smart system presents a major challenge in this process, wherein interactions between components play a vital part in ensuring smart systems function as intended.

Methods for analysing these interactions to optimise integration and identify design flaws could therefore prove helpful in designing and engineering smart systems. Social network analysis may provide engineers with a suitable tool to model and analyse complex systems comprised of interacting components to optimise their design.

This industrial tutorial will provide a compact introduction to important points of social network analysis and how it might be applied to designing and engineering smart systems. Participants are expressly encouraged to bring their own examples to which they would apply social network analysis to facilitate a practice-oriented discussion.
